Extensive trials and development of SCORPION have culminated in a new generation light tank combining the proven characteristics of earlier models with state of the art automotive and weapons system technology. The outcome is an outstandingly agile high-performance vehicle which offers its users a unique degree of tactical mobility, superior range of operation and a weapons system with a high first round hit probability.
The new generation SCORPION is derived from a family of tracked vehicles developed by Alvis in response a requirement for a lightweight armoured vehicle of approximately one-third of the weight of conventional types. It inherits its predecessor’s versatility, together with its compact dimensions and extensive use of lightweight aluminium alloy armour, a field in which Alvis enjoys world leadership. It is airportable – two may be carried in a C130; air dropable by parachute or low altitude parachute extraction system – and since it exerts a ground pressure less than that of a walking man it may be used in the most unfavourable terrain.
